Here is a look at Tuesday’s schedule at the Iowa high school boys’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
And an in-depth look at the game involving Gazette-area schools.
Class 3A quarterfinals
No. 1 Decorah (22-2) vs. Williamsburg (16-8)
Time: 2 p.m.
State tournament history: This is the second state tournament trip in three years for Decorah. It also qualified in 1972 and 1977. The school has yet to win a game at state. Williamsburg also qualified in 2003 and 2015. The Raiders won their quarterfinal in 2015, losing to LeMars in double overtime in the 3A semifinals.
Game synopsis: Decorah split a pair of games this regular season with second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock, losing at home (84-57) and winning on the road (79-76). Its other loss was to Cascade, 59-56. Williamsburg’s losses were to Grinnell (twice), Mount Vernon, Clear Creek-Amana (twice), Grand View Christian, Marion and Mid-Prairie. The losses to Clear Creek-Amana were avenged in a substate semifinal.
Four of Decorah’s starters average double-figures scoring, with the exception being senior guard Matthew Bockman, who’s at 9.6 points per game. Cousin Ben Bockman was an all-stater in 3A last season and leads the Vikings at 19.8 ppg.
Cael LaFrentz, a 6-10 sophomore and son of Decorah assistant coach and former NBA player Raef LaFrentz, is next 15.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. This is his first season on the varsity.
Then it’s senior guard Trey McCain (11.9 ppg, 7.1 assists per game), who missed all of last season recovering from a torn ACL in his knee. MFL/Mar-Mac transfer Zach Driscoll was a 2A all-stater last season and averages 10.1 ppg.
Williamsburg’s top player is 6-foot-4 senior forward Derek Weisskopf. A University of Iowa football recruit as a linebacker, he averages 21.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He was the Wamac Conference West Division Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
The Raiders’ other double-figures scorers are 6-4 junior guard Grant Hocker (10.4 ppg) and 6-6 senior forward Kellen Cockrell (10.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg).
