Class 2A’s Iowa high school boys’ state basketball qualifiers were determined in substate finals Saturday night. Here’s a look at Saturday’s scores, plus the state bracket and schedule released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
Saturday’s Class 2A Iowa high school boys’ basketball substate finals
Unity Christian 55, No. 3 West Lyon 50
Unity Christian (20-4) is state bound for the first time since winning it all in 2005. West Lyon (22-2) trailed 28-20 at halftime. Both of its losses this season came to the Knights; they split their regular-season series.
No. 1 Western Christian 62, Estherville-Lincoln Central 55
Last year’s runner-up, Western Christian (20-3) will make its 24th appearance at the state tournament. The Wolfpack have won 10 state titles. Estherville-Lincoln Central’s season ended with a 19-4 record.
No. 2 Hudson 70, North Fayette Valley 33
A banner season for Hudson (23-2) now has a state-qualifying banner, its first since 1994. North Fayette Valley (21-4) stayed close early, but the Pirates quickly built a 45-18 advantage midway through the third.
No. 6 West Burlington 56, No. 10 Cascade 51
West Burlington (22-0) stayed undefeated, leading after all four quarters in the only top-10 matchup of the night to advance to state for the first time. Cascade finished 18-5.
Iowa City Regina 64, No. 5 Pella Christian 59
Iowa City Regina (17-6) earned its 17th state tournament bid and first since 2019 by upsetting Pella Christian (18-6). Michael Martin led the way with 20 points. The Regals led 39-35 at halftime.
Grundy Center 60, No. 9 Carroll Kuemper 48
Grundy Center (20-3) qualified for the first time since 2003, secured with a 23-14 fourth quarter after holding a one-possession lead against Kuemper (19-4) after each of the first three quarters.
No. 8 Treynor 71, Grand View Christian 63
Treynor (21-3) is state bound for the 17th time and first since 2020. This game was 37-all at the half. Grand View Christian (13-10) moved up to 2A this year after winning last year’s Class 1A title.
No. 4 Underwood 81, South Hamilton 50
Unbeaten Underwood (24-0) left no doubt in clinching its first trip to the state tournament. The Eagles led 40-19 at the half. The Hawks finished 18-5.
