The Class 1A Iowa high school boys’ state basketball tournament field is set following Saturday night’s substate finals. Here’s a look at Saturday’s scores, plus the state bracket and schedule released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
Saturday’s Class 1A Iowa high school boys’ basketball substate finals
No. 8 North Union 58, South O’Brien 51 (OT)
North Union (22-3) outscored South O’Brien (21-4) in the extra period, 12-5, to qualify for state for the first time. The communities’ pre-consolidation boys’ state basketball tournament trips were rare; most recently, Fenton Sentral advanced in 2004.
No. 4 Lake Mills 41, Remsen St. Mary’s 38
Lake Mills (24-1) booked its fourth trip to state in the last five years and snapped a seven-year streak for Remsen St. Mary’s (19-4). The Bulldogs led 31-23 entering the fourth and held on.
No. 1 North Linn 74, West Fork 59
North Linn (23-1) earned its eighth consecutive state tournament bid, pulling away from an 18-17 first-quarter lead against West Fork (20-5). Now the Lynx will attempt to appear in a state championship game for the seventh straight year — and win their third championship.
No. 3 Bellevue Marquette 57, Dunkerton 42
Bellevue Marquette (25-1) advanced to state for the first time since a runner-up finish in 2006. The Defenders’ only loss this season is to top-ranked North Linn. Dunkerton finished 20-5.
No. 5 Winfield-Mount Union 46, Fort Madison Holy Trinity 41
Winfield-Mount Union (20-2) will make its first state appearance since a runner-up finish in 1996 that was part of a five-year run that also included a 1995 championship. Holy Trinity (19-6) got within two late after trailing 36-27 entering the fourth.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck 52, No. 10 Lansing Kee 49
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (21-5) returned to state with back-to-back wins over ranked teams. The Rebels, state quarterfinalists a year ago, beat sixth-ranked Keota, 67-62, in the district finals. Kee went 22-3.
No. 7 Lynnville-Sully 64, Bedford 50
Lynnville-Sully (24-1) grabbed its first state-qualifying banner since 2018, pulling away from Bedford (23-3) with an 18-6 third quarter after leading 26-25 at the half.
Woodbine 66, No. 2 Madrid 63
Woodbine (23-2) pulled the upset of the night by outscoring Madrid 18-10 in the final quarter. Woodbine is state bound for the first time since 1996. Madrid finished 22-3.
