It’s Class 4A quarterfinals, then Class 1A semifinals

The quarterfinal round of the 2022 Iowa high school boys’ state basketball tournament wraps up Wednesday with Class 4A, then it’s on to the semifinals in Class 1A at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

CLASS 4A QUARTERFINALS
No. 4 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 61, No. 5 Waukee Northwest 55
Guards Kenzie Reed (26) and Colby Dolphin (22) combined for 48 points to lead Cedar Rapids Kennedy (21-3) to the semifinals.
Reed hit 5 of 7 3-point attempts and was 8 for 12 from the field overall. Dolphin shot 5-for-11 from the field and made all 10 of his free-throw attempts. The Cougars shot 56.3 percent and made 18 of 21 free throws.
It was 26-all at the half. Henry Manning’s trey gave Northwest the lead early in the third, then Reed hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put his team up 34-29 with 5:38 left in the third and the Cougars led the rest of the way.
Waukee Northwest dwindled a 10-point lead to four with 37 seconds to go, but could get no closer. Grant Tigges scored 15 points, Pryce Sandfort 14, Cade Kelderman 12 and Manning 10. The Wolves finished their first season 20-5.

No. 1 Ames 60, No. 8 Burlington 40
Top-ranked Ames (21-3) ended Burlington’s Cinderella run in the state quarterfinals.
Iowa State signee Tamin Lipsey had 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting and nine assists for the Little Cyclones, who shot 60 percent. Jack Wynter hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points off the bench. Corey Phillips totaled 11 points and eight rebounds, Trevion LaBeaux 10 and seven.
The Grayhounds (17-8), who upset Iowa City West and Pleasant Valley to get to state for the first time since winning a title in 1987, led 11-8 after a quarter. But Ames ended the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 26-19 lead into the break and pulled away from there.
Jackson Carlson led Burlington with 12 points. Amarion Davis had 11 and eight boards.
No. 7 Cedar Rapids Prairie 62, No. 2 Cedar Falls 52
Cedar Falls’ Trey Campbell made 6 of 9 3-point attempts and scored 32 points, but Cedar Rapids Prairie had a 17-3 advantage in bench points and won the rubber match against the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division champion Tigers (20-3).
The Hawks (18-6) led 28-25 at halftime after Jake Walter made three free throws with less than a second left and they trailed only briefly in the third quarter after a Campbell 3. Prairie scored the next seven points and led the rest of the way. Walter had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Dionte Fliss scored 13. Nine different Hawks scored in the game.
Prairie won the Jan. 4 meeting, 64-56, then CF won 49-48 on Jan. 28. The Tigers’ only other loss was to Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

No. 3 Johnston 55, No. 6 Ankeny 53
Trailing 42-37, Johnston scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, then got a go-ahead 3-pointer from Steven Kramer with 5:16 left and hung on to advance.
Kramer finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Trey Lewis scored 18 points, making all 10 of his free throws. Samuel Tornabane had 10. The Dragons overcame 34.9-percent shooting and 14 turnovers with a 39-27 advantage on the boards.
JJ Kohl led Ankeny with 14 points off the bench. Carson Johnson added 10 for the Hawks, who led 24-23 at halftime.
CLASS 1A SEMIFINALS
No. 1 Grand View Christian 71, No. 4 Lake Mills 66 (2OT)
For the second straight round, Grand View Christian kept its unbeaten season alive in overtime. This time, the Thunder needed a rally from a 32-16 halftime deficit, then a second overtime after nearly losing its championship hopes in stunning fashion.
Grand View Christian (26-0) outscored Lake Mills 20-3 in the third quarter and took its first lead early in the fourth. Lake Mills’ (25-2) Wyatt Helming tied it at 52 with a 3-pointer with 1:27 left and the Thunder held for the last shot, a miss near the rim.
Manny Hammonds returned the favor in OT, drilling a 3 with 1:29 remaining to tie it at 57. Helming, who put up 36 points on 14-for-33 shooting, 11 rebounds and four assists, then almost pulled off an all-time shot with a one-handed heave from beyond half court that rimmed out at the buzzer.
GVC scored the first six points of the second overtime and made the lead hold up. Josh Baucum finished with 27 points on 9-for-16 shooting and Hammonds had 19 points. Daniel Tobiloba, a 25.7-percent free throw shooter, made four straight free throws in the final minute of 2OT and totaled five points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
CLASS 1A SEMIFINALS
No. 2 North Linn 56, No. 3 Remsen St. Mary’s 46
North Linn handed Remsen St. Mary’s its first loss and advanced to the state finals for the fifth consecutive year. The Lynx were 1A runners-up in 2018 (to Grand View Christian) and 2021, 2A champions in 2019 and 2A runners-up in 2020.
The third quarter was decisive in an otherwise back-and-forth semifinal. The Lynx outscored the Hawks 13-2, holding them without a field goal after leading just 25-24 at halftime.
Austin Hilmer scored a game-high 18 points for North Linn (26-1), Tate Haughenbury had 13 and Dylan Kurt scored 12. Carter Schorg, Austin Jensen and Jaxon Bunkers all scored 12 points for the Hawks (25-1).
