Iowa high school basketball roundup: Dec. 14 area scores, stats and more

5A No. 5 Cedar Falls 67, 4A No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier 57

Akacia Brown led the Tigers' second-half rebounding assault, and Class 5A fifth-ranked Cedar Falls pulled away from 4A No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier, 67-57, in a non-conference girls' basketball game Friday night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

An elite volleyball player who has committed to Mississippi State University, Brown used her jumping skills to grab 12 rebounds in the second half alone. She finished with 14 boards to accompany 11 points off the bench.

Emerson Green paced the Tigers (7-0) with 17 points and seven assists; Ayana Barney tallied 16 points.

5A No. 8 Iowa City West 67, Linn-Mar 51

When a team is struggling early, it is nice to have a veteran like Cailyn Morgan to take control.

During the first half of Friday night's game with Linn-Mar, the Women of Troy had trouble finding a rhythm with one exception. Morgan scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first half as West led just 26-21 at the break.

In the second half, Audrey Cook and Lauren Zacharias got into the act at West, ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, eventually pulled away for a 67-51 victory at Linn-Mar in a game between Mississippi Valley Conference foes that didn't count in the league standings.

West (5-1) turned up the defense in the second half, going to a half-court trap that kept the Lions at bay.

Koch scored 13 of her 15 in the final 16 minutes for West (4-1). Zacharias had 12 of her 15 after the break. Freshman Emma Ingersoll-Weng contributed with 12 points.

Linn-Mar (2-6), got 15 points from junior Carly Printy and 11 from sophomore Keegan Krejca.

5A No. 11 Cedar Rapids Washington 67, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 52

One team loved to pressure defensively. The other had a penchant for turning it over.

Thus, Cedar Rapids Washington's girls' basketball team was able to beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy 67-52 at Washington High School.

The Warriors, ranked 11th in Class 5A, led most of the way and moved to 6-0 overall. The Warriors forced Kennedy (1-6) to turn it over 33 times, which was telltale.

Guard Issa Truemper led Wash with 18 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Sydney Mitvalsky added 14 points for the Warriors, Caitlin Riley 13, Sammy Mia and Hannah Stuelke 11 each.

Sadie Powell led Kennedy with 18 points, 14 in the second half. Auddie Alepra added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

5A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie 69, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 32

Ninth-ranked Prairie canned nine 3-pointers, led by Mallory McDermott with three.

McDermott finished with 21 points for Prairie (4-2). Infinity Watkins led Jefferson (0-6) with 10.

5A No. 1 Iowa City High 71, Iowa City Liberty 26

The top-ranked Little Hawks had four players score in double figures Friday night in North Liberty.

Rose Nkumu led with 19 points, followed by Paige Rocca (14), Aubrey Jones (11) and Andie Westlake (10). City (5-0) led 45-20 at the half.

Jenna Saunders scored nine for Liberty (2-4).

4A No. 1 Marion 77, Maquoketa 41

Top-ranked Marion rolled to 7-0 at home. Kayba Laube had 26 points and Leah Van Weelden had 23 points in the win.

Marion hit 12 3-pointers, including six by Laube.

Nell Sybesma led Maquoketa (4-3) with 17 points.

Iowa City Regina 65, Northeast 26

Kennedy Wallace had six 3-pointers and led Regina with 26 points Friday night in Goose Lake.

Sam Greving added 13 points for Regina (4-3). Northeast fell to 2-6.

Chris Robertson has seen plenty of close games early in the boys' basketball season.

Linn-Mar senior guard Greg Hall made sure his coach didn't have to sweat through another one down the stretch Friday night. The Lions built a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter en route to a 65-54 upset of Class 4A No. 1 Iowa City West in a Mississippi Valley Conference game before a loud crowd at Linn-Mar High School.

The victory moved the Lions to 2-2 overall, 2-1 in MVC play.

Cedar Rapids Washington 61, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 58 (OT)

nother time, another gym, another official, and it might have been a charge. But Friday night, at Cedar Rapids Washington, with this official, it was a block.

And a Warriors win.

Mick McCurry's three-point play with three seconds left in overtime gave Wash a 61-58 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy in a terrific boys' basketball thriller.

Kris Murray scored 21 points and Keegan Murray added 19 points as the Hawks (3-1) won at Prairie High School.

Ozzie Meiborg led Jefferson (1-3) with 16 points.

Iowa City Liberty 61, Iowa City High 50 (OT)

Liberty won the overtime period, 11-2, and got a win over the Little Hawks at City High.

Ethan O'Donnell had 20 points for Liberty (4-1).

Carter Westlake led City (2-3) with 16 points.
