Girls' state basketball: Monday capsules

DES MOINES — Capsules for Monday's games involving area teams at the girls' state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

Class 5A quarterfinals

No. 1 Iowa City High (23-0) vs. No. 12 West Des Moines Valley (13-10)

Time: 11:45 a.m.

Top players: City High's Ashley Joens (6-0, sr.), an Iowa State University signee, is the state scoring leader at 31.0 points per game and nets 11.8 boards per contest. Rose Nkumu (5-8, soph.) and Aubrey Joens (5-9, soph.) add 13.6 and 13.4 points per game, respectively. Maryland commit Zoe Young (5-10, jr.) paces Valley at 22.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, and Shea Fuller (5-7, jr.) adds 16.4 ppg.

Coaches: Bill McTaggart is 354-114 in 20 seasons at City High, 445-175 in 25 years overall. Josef Segrist owns a 112-32 mark in six years at Valley and is 135-57 in eight seasons overall.

State-tournament history: City High is in the field for the 10th time, its second straight. City won a state title in 2008. Defending-champion Valley is making its 13th appearance.

No. 9 Iowa City West (16-7) vs. No. 3 West Des Moines Dowling (20-3)

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Top players: University of Iowa signee Logan Cook (6-1, sr.) leads West's charge. She is averaging 14.5 and 7.1 rebounds per game. Creighton commit Rachael Saunders (5-8, sr.) tore an ACL in the state tournament last year, and was limited to 14 games this season. She is averaging 10.8 ppg, and three others are scoring at least 9 ppg. Dowling's Caitlin Clark (5-11, soph.) is considered one of the nation's best sophomores, and is averaging 27.5 points per game.

Coaches: B.J. Mayer is in his 11th year at West and owns a 191-70 mark there. Overall, he is 319-153 in 20 seasons. Kristin Meyer has compiled a two-year record of 39-8 at Dowling and is 140-53 in eight seasons overall.

State-tournament history: West is making its sixth appearance, highlighted by a championship in 2012. This is Dowling's 20th trip, and that includes five championships, most recently in 2014.

Class 4A quarterfinals

No. 5 Center Point-Urbana (21-3) vs. No. 6 Boone (22-1)

Time: 5 p.m.

Top players: Drake University signee Allie Wooldridge (6-1, sr.) highlights a balanced CPU attack, averaging 13.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Adrianna Katcher (5-11, soph.) scores at a 10.3-point clip. Boone displays similar depth and is led by Caitlynne Shadle (5-6, sr.) at 14.0 points per game. Claire Sandvig (6-3, sr.) adds 12.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, and is the leading shot-blocker in 4A with 4.5 swats per contest.

Coaches: Philip Klett has tallied a 10-year mark of 163-76 at CPU, and is 198-90 in 12 years overall. Jim McPartland is 166-130 in 13 years at Boone, 259-183 in 20 seasons overall.

State-tournament history: CPU is making its sixth trip in state history, highlighted by a 2A title in 1995. The Stormin' Pointers were 3A semifinalists each of the past two seasons. Boone has qualified for the second straight year, and the fourth time overall.

No. 1 Marion (23-0) vs. No. 14 Fairfield (19-4)

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Top players: Marion is a pick-your-poison squad with nine players averaging more than 4 points per game. Kayba Laube (5-9, soph.) is a UNI commit that leads the Indians at 13.4 points per game. Saint Louis University signee Chloe Rice (5-10, sr.) adds 10.9 points and 4.3 assists per contest. Fairfield's attack is dominated by Amber Nicole Buch (5-8, sr.), who averages 20.3 points per game and is the school's all-time leading scorer. Shaylin Drish (5-5, soph.) scores at an 11.8-point clip.

Coaches: Corby Laube is in his 15th year as a coach at Marion, where he owns a mark of 222-119. That includes a six-year ledger of 103-38 with the girls' program. Brian Witzenburg is in his debut season at Fairfield and has a 19-4 career mark.

State-tournament history: Marion is a state qualifier for the fifth time, and the third straight year. The Indians were 4A runners-up last year. Fairfield was a six-player power in the 1980s, winning a state title in 1983. The Trojans are making their eighth appearance, their first since 1990.
