CEDAR RAPIDS — Mike Sconsa left Johnson Hall with a lot of answers.
And an impressive season-opening win.
“On the way down here, I was telling the (assistant) coaches that I had no real clue who we were,” Sconsa said after his Cascade girls’ basketball club ran past Springville, 61-32, in the first game of Rivalry Saturday at Johnson Hall.
“The teams we scrimmaged really pushed us, and it’s good to get exposed like that. It makes you better.”
Claudia Noonan hit a long 3-pointer for the first tally of the game, and Cascade (1-0) led from start to finish.
Molly Roling led the Cougars with 20 points, including nine in the first quarter as the Cougars built a 14-8 lead, and it was 25-10 at halftime.
“I knew I had to attack the basket,” Roling said. “We saw teams like Dubuque Wahlert and Solon before this, and you’ve got to trust that it’s going to benefit you in the long run.”
Addison Frake added 12 points (on 6-of-8 shooting) and eight rebounds for the winners.
“I’m happy with our execution. For a first game, I’ll take it,” Sconsa said.
Sophomore post Rowan Jacobi paced Springville (0-2) with 24 points and seven boards.
