WAVERLY – Wartburg College hit 52 percent from the field and received a pair of 20-point-plus games from junior forwards Cole Danielson of Marshalltown and Jordan Sathoff of Packwood in a 69-67 Iowa Conference loss to the University of Dubuque Jan. 8.
The Knights, falling to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the IIAC, got out the gates fast, holding as large as an 11-point en route to a 39-30 halftime advantage. Coach Dick Peth's team continued to remain in front in the second half with a 51-40 lead with 13:32 to go.
From that point, the two sides took haymaker swings at each other. The visiting Spartans (8-5, 2-2) started first with a 23-3 run to lead 63-54 with just over six and a half minutes to go. Wartburg answered with 10 in a row for a 64-63 edge with just under three minutes left, but UD took the final run by scoring six of the final nine points and shutting down the home team's final two offensive attempts with steals.
Sathoff turned in a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds to go with three blocked shots. It was his third double-double of the year and first since November 23 against Bethany Lutheran. Danielson added 21 and was one of two Knights with four assists.
Wartburg continues league play with an 8 p.m. start against Loras College of Dubuque Wednesday, Jan. 12.
NOTES – Danielson's 20-point-plus afternoon was his third straight and sixth of the season. … Sathoff's 28 points were a single-game career high.
