DES MOINES — Camden Davis made a pair of go-ahead free throws with 23 seconds left as second-ranked Hudson came from behind to beat Grundy Center, 55-51, in a Class 2A boys’ state basketball tournament quarterfinal Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Davis was ruled to have been intentionally fouled as he drove to the basket after being fed a pass by teammate Tanner Michael, following a Michael steal. Davis then made two more clutch free throws after being fouled on the ensuing in-bounds pass for a four-point Pirates lead.
He finished with 16 points, going 12-of-16 from the line.
Grundy Center (20-4) led for 20 minutes and nine seconds in this game, including after the first three quarters. Jalen Kirkpatrick led the Spartans with 18 points.
Michael had a game-high 21 points for Hudson (24-2), which beat Grundy twice in the regular season. the Pirates were 20 of 25 from the free-throw line to Grundy Center’s 6 for 10.
Unity Christian 59, Underwood 55
Dylan Bosma scored 25 points and Austin Wieringa added 21 as sixth-seeded Unity Christian gave Underwood its first (and only) loss this season.
Wieringa, just a 6-foot guard, also had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Knights (20-4), who led for 27 of the game’s 32 minutes.
Underwood (24-1) got 13 points and 13 rebounds from Jack Vanfossan. Owen Larson had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Mason Boothby added 12 points and Josh Ravlin 11.
Davenport Assumption 84, Ballard 73
Assumption shot 63 percent from the field and outrebounded its opponent by a 37-16 margin to win this Class 3A quarterfinal.
Damyen Jackson and Navon Shabazz scored 21 points each for the ninth-ranked, fourth-seeded Knights (17-8). Kayvion Hodges had 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Ballard (16-9) was led by Jackson Brown’s 21 points. Miles Mudd added 17 and Nolan Cogdill 15.
MOC-Floyd Valley 67, Bondurant-Farrar 50
Jesse Van Kalsbeek is really good.
The all-state guard went off in this 3A quarterfinal, scoring 37 points to lead his seventh-ranked, third-seeded team to the semifinals, opposite Waverly-Shell Rock.
Van Kalsbeek scored every which way, going 12 for 20 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. He also hit 10 of 15 free throws and had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Is that it? Carter Van Gelder was the only other player for MOC-FV (22-3) in double figures with 11.
Hudson McConnell scored 18 points and Cole Miller 17 for Bondurant-Farrar (15-10).
Waverly-Shell Rock 65, Pella 64 (OT)
Noah Frazell hit a free throw with 1.8 seconds left to win the game for second-ranked, second-seeded W-SR.
Frazell was fouled on a shot after driving the right side of the floor just outside the lane. He missed his first attempt but made his second.
The teams were tied at halftime at 31 and at the end of regulation at 57.
Cole Marsh had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Waverly-Shell Rock (21-3). Benny Ramker added 15 points and Luke Frazell 14.
Jack McGuire’s 17 points led Pella (15-10), with Brayden Traetow adding 12.
