DES MOINES — A look at Monday’s games at the 2022 Iowa high school boys’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.
Class 1A Quarterfinals
NORTH LINN (24-1) vs. NORTH MAHASKA (20-5)
When: 2 p.m.
Seeds: North Linn is the 2, North Mahaska the 7
State tournament history: This is the sixth consecutive state tournament appearance for North Linn, which finished runner-up last year to Grand View Christian. North Linn was second in 2A in 2020, won the 1A title in 2019, was second in 1A in 2018 and third in 1A in 2017. This is the sixth trip to state for North Mahaska, which went four years in a row from 2003 to 2006, including a 1A state championship in 2005
Overview: North Linn’s loss came Dec. 21 at Edgewood-Colesburg, 52-47, ending a 107-game regular-season win streak for the Lynx. North Linn has won 16 in a row since, its closest wins by 13 and 14 points, both over Ed-Co, including 51-38 in a substate final. Senior guard Austin Hilmer leads NL in scoring (20.0 points per game) and averages 7.8 assists and 4.4 steals. Junior post Tate Haughenbury averages 15.5 points and shoots 68 percent from the field. Senior guard Dylan Kurt averages 13.4 points and shoots 41 percent from 3-point range. Senior forward Cade Haughenbury averages 10.4 points
North Mahaska’s losses were to Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Iowa Valley, Lynnville-Sully, Montezuma and 2A Eddyville EBF. The Warhawks start four juniors, including leading scorer Nash Smith (19.9 ppg), the tallest player at 6-foot-6. Junior Lane Harmon is next at 14.0 ppg. Braden Steel leads NM in rebounds (9.4) and assists (4.4).
