IOWA CITY — Another Joens. Another Cyclone.
Aubrey Joens, a junior at Iowa City High, has committed to play women's basketball at Iowa State University.
'The coaches, the players there, the opportunity to play in front of 10,000 fans ... it's a good fit for me,' Joens said Thursday night.
Joens will join the Cyclones in 2020-21, and will have two seasons in Ames with older sister Ashley, who will be an ISU freshman this season. Ashley was a two-time Gazette-area player of the year and the 2018 Gazette Female Athlete of the Year.
'I look up to her,' Aubrey said. 'She has accomplished a lot and pushed me to get better.'
As a sophomore, Aubrey averaged 12.9 points per game last season as the Little Hawks went 26-1 and reached the Class 5A championship game. She hit 54 3-point goals.
Joens earned 5A third-team all-state honors last season. She has 549 career points through two seasons.
Now, she and fellow juniors Rose Nkumu and Paige Rocca will be depended upon to keep City High at a high level.
'We'll be a lot more of a guard-oriented team,' she said.
Aubrey, who also considered Creighton, Michigan and Drake, will be the third Joens girl to play Division-I basketball. Courtney Joens will be a junior at the University of Illinois next season.
