CEDAR RAPIDS - A bit of shuffling in the lower three classes. A bit more than shuffling in the biggest class.
That’s the best way to sum up this week’s boys basketball rankings poll from the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
It’s the same 10 teams ranked in Class 1A, 2A and 3A, though there are new number ones in Huxley Ballard (3A) and Fort Dodge St. Edmond (1A). Ballard fell out of the top spot for the first time this season last week because of a loss but inched back from second to first after Storm Lake (last week’s No. 1) lost to Carroll Kuemper last Monday.
Kuemper is the top-ranked team in 2A.
Storm Lake dropped to third in 3A, just behind No. 2 Adel-DeSoto-Minburn. Solon and Cedar Rapids Xavier stayed eighth and ninth, and that’s with Solon losing this past Saturday to Decorah.
Iowa City Regina (16-1) stays a strong third this week in Class 2A, behind Kuemper (17-3) and Orange City Unity Christian (18-2). Union Community (17-2) fell from seventh to eighth after a loss last week to Aplington Parkersburg (17-3), which moved up from ninth to seventh.
The top three teams in last week’s Class 1A poll (Marcus MMCRU, Burlington Notre Dame and Algona Garrigan) lost last week, which allowed St. Edmond (18-2) to move up from fourth to first. The Gaels had a big win last week over 3A No. 7 Clear Lake.
Marcus MMCRU, Notre Dame and Garrigan are second through fourth in that order. Bellevue (17-3) is sixth and Bellevue Marquette (18-2) ninth.
Class 4A had the only teams to fall out of the top 10. That would be Council Bluffs Lincoln and Muscatine.
Cedar Falls (17-0) remains a very strong No. 1, followed by Waukee, Waukee Northwest and West Des Moines Dowling in that order. Waukee beat Northwest last week, which necessitated a flip flop.
Dubuque Senior (17-1) is fifth. Cedar Rapids Prairie (13-4), which has won 10 of 11 games, joined the 4A top 10 for the first time this season after weekend wins over Linn-Mar and 4A No. 10 Des Moines Roosevelt, the latter in overtime.
These are the final polls in 1A and 2A, as postseason play begins. There will be one more poll next Monday for 3A and 4A.
