All-tournament captain one week, all-stater the next.
The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released its 2025 all-state softball teams late Monday night, and junior pitcher Jersey Metz highlights a trio of Williamsburg players named to the Class 3A first team.
Seniors Alley Gorsh and Makenna Hughes also were honored after helping lead the Raiders (36-7) to their third consecutive 3A state championship.
Despite modest strikeout numbers, Metz (21-5) was a master of placement and spin, posting a 2.03 ERA. She was the winning pitcher in the Raiders’ 3-2 win over No. 1 Dubuque Wahlert in the 3A final.
Gorsh (.469) and Hughes (.432) combined to score 100 runs and drive in 73.
The top-ranked 4A team for much of the season (it finished fifth at state), Cedar Rapids Xavier (38-6) matched Williamsburg as the area leader in total all-staters, with four — including first-teamers Braylen Conlon and Katie Pilcher.
Bound for the University of Iowa, Conlon (27-1) racked up 318 strikeouts (in 164 innings) and posted a 0.55 ERA. Pilcher (.379) hit 21 home runs — tied for second in the state — and drove in 55 runs.
Those senior batterymates are among seven Metro/Iowa City players to earn first-team all-state status.
Linn-Mar senior pitcher Emily Koranda, who led the Lions to second place in Class 5A, made the big-school first team, as did Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Morgan Hewitt, Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Lily Knutson, Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Riley Redig and Iowa City High’s Molly Carlson.
In the 5A final, Koranda (20-3, 0.85) limited top-ranked Waukee Northwest to a single run in the eight-inning championship-game defeat. She struck out 219 throughout the season and is bound for Missouri State University.
Conlon and Pilcher are joined on the 4A first team by Clear Creek Amana’s Kyla Schulte and Western Dubuque’s Melanie Runde.
The Williamsburg trio are among nine area players to garner first-team honors in 3A. They are accompanied by Ana Glawe of Benton Community, Mya Hillers of Center Point-Urbana, Hayden Gookin of Mount Vernon, Ella Greiner and Leighton Salazer of Washington and Pearson Hall of West Liberty.
Cascade’s Addison Frake, Jesup’s Sarah Mead and Lisbon’s Addie Clark are 2A first-teamers, while the 1A first team includes Rachel Eglseder of Edgewood-Colesburg, Kamryn Fink of Highland, Addison Winters of Lansing Kee, Kenzie Bridgewater of North Linn and Josephine Moore of Sigourney.
Xavier’s Nikki Gahring and Williamsburg’s Adam Berte are the state coaches of the year in 4A and 3A, respectively.
