East Buchanan’s first state baseball appearance was memorable. The Buccaneers had posted one upset and their bid for a second just missed in an 8-5 loss to No. 3 Saint Ansgar in the Class 1A semifinals Wednesday night in Carroll.

Iowa City Liberty’s baseball team scored a run in the top of the first inning in its Class 4A state tournament quarterfinal Tuesday night against Waukee Northwest. But the Wolves couldn’t dent Northwest pitcher Chuck Berdovich the rest of the way, and Northwest went on to a 4-1 victory.
State softball: Only three of Highland’s 16 varsity players have a driver’s license, but the Huskies hang around with No. 1 Wayne before bowing in a Class 1A quarterfinal.
