Former Beloit Snappers outfielder Herschel 'Boog” Powell was suspended 50 games Monday for testing positive for amphetamines, Major League Baseball announced.
Powell was recently promoted to Stockton of the high-Class A California League. He was MVP of the recent Midwest League All-Star Game and was leading the league in hitting at .335 in 69 games.
Powell, 21, is not related to former major leaguer Boog Powell. He was a 20th-round draft pick of the Oakland A's last year out of Orange Coast Junior College in California.
He is the 36th player this season to be suspended for violating Minor League Baseball's drug program. The players include infielder Jonatan Hinojosa, who was suspended for a performance-enhancing drug in May while a member of the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
