CLINTON - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lashed out 15 hits and got strong starting pitching from Aaron Slegers in a 12-1 win Sunday afternoon over the Clinton LumberKings at Ashford University Field.
The Kernels (12-10) swept the three-game series and went 3-3 on a six-game road trip that included three games (all losses) at Peoria. They return home Monday night to host Kane County at 6:35.
Cedar Rapids Washington grad Chad Christensen went 3-for-5 for the Kernels with three runs and an RBI. He has reached base in his last 14 games.
Zack Larson also was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Ivory Thomas, who joined the team Saturday from extended spring training, homered.
Slegers allowed just six hits, walked none and struck out eight over seven innings to improve to 2-0. The Kernels scored twice each in the first, third and fourth innings and three times each in the sixth and ninth.
