CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids Kernels had their game Thursday night against the Peoria Chiefs suspended by rain.
The Kernels lead the game, 6-2, and it will be completed Monday afternoon at 5 when they travel to Peoria for a series. A seven-inning game will follow.
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Stephen Gonsalves allowed two runs in the top of the first inning Thursday, but the Kernels rebounded for a pair in the bottom half. Tanner English led off with a triple to the fence in left-center, Nick Gordon singled him home and went to third on a Trey Vavra double.
A sacrifice fly to right by Zack Larson scored Gordon.
The Kernels added four more runs in the second against Peoria starting pitcher Dewin Perez. Rainis Silva led off with a double and scored on a Blake Schmit sacrifice fly.
English walked with two outs, Gordon reached on a fielding error and Vavra stroked a three-run home run to left-center. After the tumultuous first, Gonsalves settled down and retired the final 10 hitters he faced.
After several manicuring and drying sessions from the grounds crew, umpires finally called for the tarp after Gonsalves struck out Alex DeLeon to end the top of the fourth. Tyler Kuresa will lead off the bottom of the fourth when the game resumes Monday.
The Kernels (21-12) begin a three-game home series against Quad Cities on Friday night at 6:35.
