Iowa stymies Maryland in Big Ten baseball opener

IOWA CITY - C.J. Eldred gave up six hits and a run while striking out nine in a complete game as Iowa opened Big Ten play by beating Maryland 8-1 at Duane Banks Field on Friday.
Nick Cieri's RBI single scored Madison Nickens to give Maryland an early lead in the top of the first, but Eldred gave up just four hits the rest of the way.
Iowa (8-11, 1-0) jumped on Terps (10-11, 0-1) starter Mike Shawaryn for four runs with two outs in the second, including a Robert Neustrom two-RBI triple and Joel Booker two-run homer.
Austin Guzzo was 3-for-4 and had RBI doubles for the Hawkeyes in the seventh and eighth innings. Booker, Neustrom, Tyler Peyton, Jimmy Frankos and Mason McCoy each had two hits.
The three-game series resumes at 2:05 p.m. Saturday and concludes Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
