Monday’s Iowa high school state softball scores
CLASS 5A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 West Des Moines Valley 11, Cedar Rapids Prairie 1 (5 innings)
They just don’t miss.
“We have veteran hitters up and down the lineup,” West Des Moines Valley softball coach Tom Bakey said. “They have good command of the strike zone.
“They try not to chase, and they hit strikes.”
Some of them, like Mack Mohler, hit them hard.
Mohler smoked a home run and two doubles, and top-ranked Valley looked the part in an 11-1 five-inning victory over Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Class 5A state quarterfinal Monday morning at the Rogers Sports Complex.
“They’re good hitters anyway, and it doesn’t help when you give them 10 or 11 bases, whether it was errors, walks, hit batters,” Prairie Coach Alisha Frese said. “You can’t do that, especially against the No. 1 team in the state.”
Alas, five errors helped open the door for nine two-out runs for the Tigers (37-4), who won their 24th straight game and advance to face No. 9 Ankeny (22-20) in an all-CIML semifinal at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

No. 9 Ankeny 2, No. 4 Waukee Northwest 0
No. 2 Pleasant Valley 8, No. 13 Waukee 7 (8 innings)
No. 11 Urbandale 10, No. 3 Muscatine 9
CLASS 4A QUARTERFINALS
No. 8 Carlisle 8, No. 2 Dallas Center-Grimes 6
No. 7 North Scott 2, No. 3 Norwalk 0
No. 5 Adel ADM 2, No. 6 Fort Dodge 0
No. 1 North Polk 7, No. 9 Western Dubuque 2
Western Dubuque got a fluky, goofy, early run.
After that? Not much.
North Polk pitcher Ava Husak settled down quickly and crafted a two-hitter, and also supplied a dagger three-run home run. That was more than enough to send the top-ranked Comets past No. 9 Western Dubuque, 7-2, in a Class 4A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament Monday night at the Rogers Sports Complex.
The Comets (37-4) will face Raccoon River Conference rival Adel ADM (30-9) in a 4A semifinal at 12:45 Wednesday afternoon.,
In one stretch, Husak (28-4) retired 12 straight batters.

CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS
No. 2 Williamsburg 8, No. 8 Monroe PCM 3
With the second-ranked Raiders facing an early 3-1 deficit, Jersey Metz held PCM in place for the final five innings, and the Williamsburg bats eventually came around.
“I was adjusting to the strike zone,” said Metz (21-6), a sophomore. “It was a big adjustment to me.
“I’d never pitched at the state tournament before. I wanted to be over the plate, but not too much over it.”
Williamsburg (31-12) advances to the 3A semifinals for the fifth consecutive year
Williamsburg took the lead for good in the fifth.
Taylor Pitlick’s double plated Carly Rich, who had led off with a walk. Then, with one out, Taylor Sanchez’s drive to deep right field went off a glove, off the top of the fence, then over for a two-run home run and some breathing room at 6-3.
“I saw it go off her glove,” Sanchez said. “I should send a thank-you card.
“We play great competition all year, and that helps us get ready for big moments like this.”
