DYERSVILLE — Cascade remains alive for a third straight Iowa high school baseball state tournament berth.
The Cougars scratched and clawed with five runs in their final at-bat to upset No. 5 Dyersville Beckman, 9-6, for the Class 2A District 7 baseball title Saturday night at Commercial Club Park.
Cascade trailed 6-1 after the fourth inning and battled back by scoring in each of the final three innings.
“They fight till the end,” said Cascade Coach Roamn Hummel, who witnessed his team come from behind to beat Iowa City Regina in extra innings to reach the district final. “They believed in themselves.”
In the seventh, Will Hosch sparked the rally with his second RBI double of the game. Mick Hoffman drew a bases-loaded walk to score Hosch and tie the game. Catcher Tyler Smith stepped to the plate and smacked a three-run double for the lead.
It was the second victory in three games against Beckman, splitting a doubleheader at Commercial Club Park exactly a month before the district final. The Cougars opened the postseason with a losing record and are now a win away from a third straight state appearance.
“I never would have thought this halfway through the season,” Hummel said. “Going into the year, I felt like we were going to be who we are right now. We brought back a lot of good players, but just didn’t get off to a great start.
“We didn’t find our rhythm. Once we started to play more, the guys found that rhythm and we’ve been playing really well.”
The Cougars (14-12) set up the late rally with RBI doubles from junior Cooper Hummel and Hosch in the fifth. Cooper Hummel has been a key leader for the team during the postseason.
“Cooper has really stepped up as a leader for us,” the older Himmel said. “He’s vocal on the bench.”
Smith had an RBI single in the sixth and finished with a team-high three hits and four RBIs. Cascade’s Cass Hoffman added two hits and Charlie Thole pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the win.
“As a team, we’ve tried to get as many swings as possible in to help make some adjustments,” Roamn Hummel said.
Beckman ended the season at 18-11. All-stater Luke Sigwarth hit a three-run home run for the second straight game.
Cascade will play Wilton (19-10) in a substate final Tuesday at Solon. The Beavers blanked Tipton for the 2A District 8 championship. Wilton’s Ben Garvin and Landyn Putman combined for the shutout.
Anamosa 6, Mediapolis 4
Jackson Watters belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, lifting the Blue Raiders over the Bulldogs and securing the 2A District 10 title. It is the second straight district crown for Anamosa (20-9).
Watters finished 3-for-4 with two doubles. Carter Kuehl also had a home run and two RBIs, while Easton Wheeler had two hits and two RBIs. Jack Sellnau pitched two innings of relief for the win.
Anamosa advances to face No. 8 Sumner Fredericksburg (22-4) at Beckman Sports Complex in Manchester. The Cougars edged Alburnett, 2-1, for the 2A District 9 crown. Tatum Nass hit a two-run home run in the fourth for the decisive scores.
The Blue Raiders are looking for their first state tournament berth.
South Winneshiek 3, Lansing Kee 1
The Warriors broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth for the 1A District 8 title. Carson Streeter made an impact at the plate and on the mound. He drove in a run and scored once and allowed just one run on two hits, striking out six in the win.
Parker Timp had two hits and an RBI. Kole Hageman drove in a run. Braiden Todd and Mason Zweibahmer scored.
It was the fourth time South Winneshiek beat Lansing Kee this season. The Warriors (23-9) move on to play No. 10 Don Bosco (24-8) at Charles City. The Dons beat No. 6 Saint Ansgar, 5-3, in the 1A District 7 final.
Sigourney 6, BGM 1
The Savages erupted for five runs in the third and coasted to the 1A District 12 title. Sigourney received three RBIs from Isaac Bruns. Cole McKay and Caden Clarahan added a hit and an RBI for Sigourney, which is looking for its first state tournament appearance.
Reid Molyneux pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Chase Clarahan tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Sigourney (20-4) plays No. 2 Burlington Notre Dame (28-3) in a substate final Tuesday at Fairfield Middle School.
