Iowa high school baseball 2024 all-state teams: Cedar Rapids Kennedy has 5 selections
Honored Class 4A state champion Cougars include all-state captain Nolan Grawe

Cedar Rapids Kennedy produced a memorable baseball season.
The Cougars capped the summer with their second Class 4A state title in school history and set a program record with 36 victories. The team success also yielded individual honors.
Five Kennedy players earned all-state honors from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released Friday. The postseason awards are another example of the special group.
“So happy for those kids,” Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer said. “They’re very deserving. They’ve put in a ton of time practicing on their own over several years (and) participating in competitive fall and spring leagues while playing other high school sports at the same time.”
Seniors Nolan Grawe, Grant Mather, Lincoln Meyers and Matt Stoltenberg led the way. Grawe and Mather were named to the IHSBCA “Super Team” and Meyers and Stoltenberg were 4A first-team selections. The class left an indelible mark on Kennedy’s baseball tradition.
“All the seniors embraced the ‘leave the program in better shape than you found it’ mantra,” Hoyer said. “No question they have.”
Kennedy junior Colton Duerling, who earned wins in both the state semifinals and final, was named to the Super Team with Grawe and Mather.
Grawe, a first-team pick last year, batted .496, led the state with 54 RBIs and tied for the state lead with 14 home runs. His 59 hits ranked third among all classes. Grawe, who will play at South Dakota State, was also named all-Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Divison, all-Metro and Gazette Player of the Year.
“Nolan played at an extremely high level all season long,” Hoyer said. “Most impressive to me was his growth as a leader. He supported and challenged his teammates appropriately. He held himself to a very high standard and held others accountable without demeaning anyone.”
Western Dubuque senior Colin McDermott and Solon’s Brett White were also Super Team picks. White, who will play for Baylor University, made the Super Team for the second straight season.
White hit .398 with a .560 on-base percentage. His 57 runs tied for fourth among all classes and his 13 home runs were third overall.
Iowa City Liberty pitcher Mason Waterbury and Iowa City High’s Jaxton Schroeder were named to the first team in 4A. Schroeder was named utility.
Waterbury produced one of the top seasons on the mound. He posted a 10-0 record with a minuscule 0.34 earned-run average. The junior left-hander struck out 68 batters in 61 innings and walked only 15, allowing just eight total runs on 31 hits.
Liberty Coach Uby Martinez said Waterbury deserved the honor, reaping the rewards of his hard work.
“It was so important to see his success pay off for our program as a whole,” Martinez said. “Coaches can preach competitiveness in their programs but until the players see what a true competitor looks like up close, the words mean nothing.
“Mason has shown our players and future players what it looks like to compete on the mound. The program will benefit from having him in our program, even after he has graduated.”
Trey Franck was a leader for Marion, which made the 3A state semifinals. The senior outfielder earned first-team all-state honors. Clear Creek Amana infielders Maclane Morgan and Ty Fuller were also first-teamers in 3A.
Dyersville Beckman seniors Matt Florence and Luke Sigwarth were first-team picks in 2A. They were joined by Jesup’s Jack Miller.
North Linn and Sigourney each made 1A state tournament appearances and had two first-team all-state performers. Caden Clarahan and Reid Molyneux made it for the Savages, who made their first state tournament trip. Lynx outfielder Cole Griffith and utility player Mason Bechen made the first team, along with South Winneshiek’s Braiden Todd and Edgewood-Colesburg’s Pryce Rochford.
Cael Benesh was a second-team selection, giving the Lynx three on the 1A teams.
“Three very talented athletes that went out of their way to show this young team how to compete and work hard at the varsity level,” North Linn Coach Travis Griffith said. “I was impressed with how well they all got along with the big age difference. No way we would have had our success without (their) leadership on and off the field.”
