Here are Gazette area players to watch as the 2023 Iowa high school baseball season starts Monday.
Players to watch
Mason Bechen, North Linn, soph., Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 1A second-team all-state, first-team all-Tri-Rivers Conference West. Tied for second in 1A with 52 RBIs. Batted .456 with .561 OBP, .811 slugging percentage, 41 hits, 13 doubles, five triples, three home runs and 71 total bases. Posted 7-0 record with 1.06 WHIP. Struck out 55 in 44 1/3 innings pitched.
Hunter Clark, Lisbon, sr., IHSBCA 1A second-team all-state, TRC East Division Player of the Year. Posted 7-2 record with 1.64 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings pitched. Batted .402 with .519 OBP, 35 hits, nine doubles and 29 RBIs.
Myles Davis, Marion, jr., IHSBCA 3A first-team all-state, first-team all-Wamac East. Batted .423 with .517 OBP, 41 hits, 30 RBIs, 29 runs. Posted 6-0 record with 1.91 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched.
Kaden Frommelt, Marion, sr., IHSBCA 3A first-team all-state, first-team all-Wamac East. Led 3A with 58 RBIs. Batted .441 with .550 OBP, 45 hits, nine home runs, 14 doubles and four triples and 84 total bases.
Jake Goodman, Western Dubuque, jr., IHSBCA 3A first-team all-state, first-team, all-Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi. Batted .393 with .528 OBP, 53 hits, 13 doubles, 52 runs, 23 RBIs. Went 2-2 with 2.59 ERA. Held opponents to .182 batting average.
Nolan Grawe, C.R. Kennedy, jr., IHSBCA Class 4A third-team all-state team, first-team all-MVC Valley. Batted .435 with .497 on-base percentage. Collected 54 hits with 43 RBIs, 16 doubles, 26 runs.
Karson Grout, Mid-Prairie, jr., IHSBCA 2A second-team all-state, All-River Valley Conference Elite team selection. Batted .372 with .533 OBP, 29 hits and 28 RBIs. Posted 4-0 record with 2.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings pitched.
Brody Hoffmann, C.R. Xavier, sr., First-team all-MVC Valley and all-Metro, IHSBCA second-team all-district. Batted .336 with .474 OBP, 40 hits, seven doubles, two home runs, 26 RBIs and 55 total bases.
Mitchell Johnson, Independence, sr., First-team all-Wamac West, second-team all-district. Tied for second in 3A with 11 home runs. Batted .368 with .487 OBP, .680 slugging percentage, 46 hits, 52 RBIs and 45 runs.
Alex Knudtson, Iowa City High, sr., IHSBCA second-team all-district, second-team all-MVC Mississippi. Batted .363 with .440 OBP, 45 hits, 38 RBIs and 27 runs. Posted 3-2 record with 3.13 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 28 innings.
Luke Schieltz, Dyersville Beckman, sr., IHSBCA 2A first-team all-state, first-team all-Wamac East. Led 2A and Wamac East with 59 hits. Batted .496 with .561 OBP, 10 doubles, four triples, five home runs, 92 total bases, 45 runs and 29 RBIs.
Jace Scott, C.R. Kennedy, jr., IHSBCA 4A third-team all-state, second-team all-MVC Valley. Posted 5-3 record in 11 appearances. Tallied 51 strikeouts with 1.79 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. Batted .327 with .406 OBP, 37 hits, 30 runs and 36 RBIs.
Keagan Streeter, South Winneshiek, sr., IHSBCA 1A second-team all-state, all-Upper Iowa Conference, 8-3 record, 1.22 ERA, 109 strikeouts.
Cal Sullivan, C.R. Prairie, sr., IHSBCAssociation all-state super team selection and first-team all-MVC Mississippi Division. Batted .432 with 57 hits, 17 doubles, five home runs and 46 RBIs. Kirkwood College commit.
Isaac Then, Western Dubuque, sr., IHSBCA 3A first-team all-state, second-team all-MVC Mississippi. Went 8-0 with a 1.71 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 80 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings pitched. Batted .378 with .414 OBP, 51 hits, 14 doubles, 71 total bases, 39 RBIs and 22 runs.
Brett White, Solon, jr., IHSBCA 3A first-team all-state, Wamac East Division Player of the Year. Batted .482 with 55 hits, 14 doubles, seven home runs, 55 runs and 45 RBIs. Ranked second in 3A with 40 stolen bases and .619 OBP.
