Gable Mitchell of Iowa City High has decided to stay close to home to continue his baseball career.
The grandson of legendary wrestler and coach Dan Gable and the son of City High coach Brian Mitchell, Gable Mitchell announced Wednesday he will continue his career at Iowa, his dad said.
“It’s been a long process, and then happened quick,” his dad wrote in a text.
A first-team all-Mississippi Valley Conference and second-team all-state pick, Mitchell also had offers from Oklahoma State and Dallas Baptist.
“Primary shortstop with a younger frame with room to fill out and add strength,” Perfect Game noted in his profile. “Rounds the ball well, working through the backhand well with clean glove actions throughout. Feet move well, showing some good range in both directions. ... Switch hitter, that has a tall and narrow stance from the right side of the plate. ... Has some present pop when squared, showing some gap-to-gap power as well.”
He was named to 2019 PG Midwest Top Prospect Games and Top Prospect List.
