Ten musical acts to catch in Eastern Iowa this week

CHARLIE HUNTER TRIO

With a career spanning 16 years and 20 albums, Charlie Hunter has consistently upped his game as an innovative writer, bandleader and guitarist. He has worked with the likes of Norah Jones, Mos Def, John Mayer and D'Angelo, and is widely considered the authority on the seven- and eight-string guitar. His trio's current lineup includes drummer Damon Grant and vocalist Dara Tucker.

MARIANO BARREIRO TANGO TRIO

Listen and dance to Classic Argentine tango music from the Mariano Barreiro Tango Trio, featuring Charles Gorczynski on bandoneon (Argentine accordion), Mariano Barreiro on piano, and Santiago Cursach. Gorczynski, of Chicago, is now based in San Francisco, and Barreiro and Cursach are from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

DAMANI PHILLIPS QUARTET

The Damani Phillips Quartet will present a program of original compositions and atypical songs from Coe College's jazz tradition. Phillips is an associate professor of jazz studies and African American studies at the University of Iowa, Joining him onstage are Coe Assistant Professor of Music Steve Shanley on piano, Steve Carlson on bass and Fabio Augustinas on drums.

STEVE EARLE

Three-time Grammy Award recipient and 11-time Grammy nominee Steve Earle is a cornerstone artist of Americana music. Always musically adventurous, he's released 20 albums, exploring folk, blues, rock, country, rockabilly and bluegrass genres. Among his diverse collaborators are The Pogues, Lucinda Williams, Patti Smith, The Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow and Shawn Colvin. His new album, 'So You Wannabe an Outlaw,' digs into his country songwriting roots and includes collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush and Miranda Lambert. During his four-decade career, Earle also has become an author, stage and screen actor, activist, record producer and radio host.

BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL

A star of the Broadway stage ('Man of La Mancha,' 'Ragtime,' 'Kiss Me Kate') and screen ('Trapper John, M.D.,' 'Frasier,' 'Glee,' 'The Blacklist'), Brian Stokes Mitchell possesses what the New York Times calls 'a singularly thunderous baritone.' He and his trio will join the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra on the Hancher stage.

NILS FRAHM

From his introduction to piano in his childhood, avant-garde musician Nils Frahm began to immerse himself in the styles of classical pianists from previous generations as well as the music of contemporary composers, before forging his own musical path through composition. Today, he continues to work as a composer, producer and performer from his Berlin-based studio at the renowned Funkhaus, taking an unconventional approach to an age-old instrument.

FOREIGNER

Responsible for some of rock's most enduring anthems, including 'Jukebox Hero,' 'Cold As Ice,' 'Hot Blooded,' 'Waiting For A Girl Like You,' 'Feels Like The First Time,' 'Dirty White Boy' and 'I Want To Know What Love Is,' Foreigner continues to rock the charts more than 40 years into the game. The band has teamed up with musical prodigy Dave Eggar to create a live orchestra engagement featuring those hits. The concert will feature Foreigner, a rock orchestra and 25 singers from Solon High School's choir.
