ScreenDance spotlights movement in film
Hoopla
Apr. 26, 2018 10:15 am
IOWA CITY - Part of the 12th Iowa Dance Festival, ScreenDance presents a curated program of short films at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at FilmScene, 118 E. College St.
The films were selected from more than 100 entries from 25 different countries. Celebrating a genre of dance made exclusively for the camera, ScreenDance spotlights films that use dance and movement as the central theme of the story.
The festival, now in its third year, provides a platform for dancers, choreographers, filmmakers, writers, screenwriters, poets and artists to explore this interdisciplinary genre - and offers local audiences the opportunity to engage with this international celebration of dance and art.
The event opens each day at 11:30 a.m. with a conversation with festival keynote speaker and moderator Mara Renzi, a choreographer and NEA award recipient. Admission is $8, with advance tickets available at Icfilmscene.org/series-special-events/
ScreenDance founded and director is Eloy Barragan, associate professor in the University of Iowa Department of Dance, with co-director Nora Garda. It is part of the 10th annual Iowa Dance Festival, celebrating National Dance Week.
International dance day
IOWA CITY - Area residents are invited to join hundreds of people and cities throughout the world in an international dance project.
Earlier this year, the Pina Bausch Foundation launched 'The Nelken Line” project to encourage dance enthusiasts - and their willing friends, colleagues, students and family members - to start their own lines and share the videos of them.
To participate, don your favorite fancy outfit and meet at 1 p.m. Sunday at FilmScene, 118 E. College St. PATV will record the public performances and create video clips that will be shared with the Iowa City community and posted internationally on the Pina Bausch Foundation website.
This project has been performed throughout the world, from Morocco to Chile, and Ireland to Romania performing in locations like soccer stadiums, a French nursery school and through the campus of Jacob's Pillow.
