Syttende Mai (May 17) is the day Norway ratified its constitution in 1814 at Eidsvoll. Now, Norwegians celebrate their constitution with excited crowds, especially children, marching through the streets waving flags, singing songs and celebrating their nation's independence. Vesterheim, Decorah's National Norwegian-American Museum & Heritage Center, opens its doors for guided tours at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and an exhibit gallery talk at 11 a.m. The action moves outdoors for a Children's Parade at noon downtown, and the Nordic Dancers performing on Mill Street at 12:25 p.m. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission.
