Woodbury picks up double-double in Sioux City East's win over W.D.M. Valley

DES MOINES -- Not a dominant individual game for Adam Woodbury, but a good game. A good team game.
The Iowa Hawkeyes signee scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds as Sioux City East held off West Des Moines Valley, 66-60, in a Class 4A state basketball tournament quarterfinal Wednesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
East (20-3) plays top-ranked and unbeaten Ankeny (24-0) in a 4A semifinal Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
"We had some guys step up and play major roles today," Woodbury said.
Valley Coach Jeff Horner, the former Hawkeye guard, came out in a triangle-and-two defense against Woodbury and guard J.C. Fuller. The Tigers also spent most of the afternoon double and triple-teaming the 7-foot-1 Woodbury.
That led to his taking just six shots, making five. But he didn't force anything and showed very good vision in finding open teammates.
"That worried me, because he's such a good passer," Horner said.
Four Black Raiders scored in double figures, led by Fuller, with 19. East held a 13-point lead in the second half, only to have Valley rally to go ahead in the fourth, thanks in part to Woodbury getting into foul trouble.
East made enough plays down the stretch to go back ahead and stay ahead.
"We wanted to make it interesting," Woodbury joked. "I didn't have any fouls in the first half, but I got them quick in the second half. I made some major errors in my play that cost me. It wasn't the refs at all. It was my play. I've got to learn from that."
