Of the eight remaining members of the U.S. Supreme Court, five have been appointed by Republican presidents and three by Democratic presidents:
Chief Justice John G. Roberts: President George W. Bush nominated him; took his seat Sept. 29, 2005.
Associate Justice Clarence Thomas: President George H.W. Bush nominated him; he took his seat Oct. 23, 1991.
Associate Justice Stephen G. Breyer: President Bill Clinton nominated him; he took his seat Aug. 3, 1994.
Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.: President George W. Bush nominated him; he took his seat Jan. 31, 2006.
Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor: President Barack Obama nominated her; she took her seat Aug. 8, 2009.
Associate Justice Elena Kagan: President Barack Obama nominated her; she took her seat Aug. 7, 2010.
Associate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch: President Donald Trump nominated him; he took his seat April 10, 2017.
Associate Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh: President Donald Trump nominated him; he took his seat Oct. 6, 2018.
