Washington boys tennis coach dead

Apr. 2, 2011 9:31 pm
Cedar Rapids Washington Athletics Director Paul James confirmed Saturday night that Warriors boys' tennis coach Dave Meyer has died.
James was unsure of the details, but he knew an ambulance was called to Meyer's residence.
"I don't have any facts of the situation," said James, noting that he was informed of the coach's death by Meyer's wife on Saturday.
Meyer was starting his sixth year as Washington's varsity coach, continuing the Warriors' tradition in boys' tennis by guiding them to a 65-19 record. He also coached senior Charlie Hammond and sophomore Mitch Blades to a state runner-up performance last year. Meyer was optimistic for this season with five of six starters returning from the 2010 team.
Meyer was a special education teacher and James said he impacted students through academics and athletics.
"He was a valuable member of the staff in the classroom and in the athletic arena," James said. "He's really going to be missed by a lot of people."
