Wahlert drops Warriors

Sep. 16, 2011 10:50 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids Washington had no answer for Riley McCarron.
The athletic Dubuque Wahlert quarterback had his way with the Warriors in the second-half, powering the Golden Eagles to a 31-10 in a Mississippi valley Conference football game Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
McCarron threw for four touchdowns, amassing 270 passing yards and adding 76 rushing. McCarron often made plays out of nothing, scrambling from Washington defenders until finding an open receiver.
“I just tried to make plays,” McCarron said. “The line did a great job on pass blocking. It was a total team effort.”
Brady Williams was the go-to guy for McCarron, finding him on long pass plays. Williams, a senior wideout, caught three of those scoring strikes and finished with 162 yards on five catches.
On the first play of the second quarter, McCarron hit Brady Williams, who was streaking down the field on a post pattern, and he out-ran Warrior defenders for a 56-yard TD to tie the game 7-7.
They hooked up on Wahlert's final two scores with McCarron hitting Williams over the middle on a second-and-goal from the 8-yard line to put the Golden Eagles up, 24-10, in the third. McCarron then hit him for a 29-yard TD, rolling left and floating a pass down field to the open Williams in the fourth.
“Brady and I have a weird chemistry,” McCarron said. “it seems every time I scramble and I'm looking for an open guy he's the one there coming down field with his hand up.
“I give him tremendous credit for making plays and staying open,” McCarron said. “He's catching my attention and all I have to do is throw him the ball.”
“He's doing all the work and he deserves all the credit he's going to get.”
Wahlert (3-1) learned a valuable lesson, owning a lead over Linn-Mar last week before the Lions trounced them in the second half. This time Wahlert scored 21 unanswered points and shut out the Warriors, picking off three passes, including one by McCarron.
“It was a huge win tonight,” McCarron said. “This was a game we needed to get. Washington is a great team. To come here and beat them here is a tremendous step forward for us.”
“We never gave up,” McCarron said. “We came out with that intensity the second half, and we learned last week what it's like to come out in the second half with no intensity and we got killed. To come out this week and put some points on the board in the second half and not give anything up on defense is a tremendous step for us.”
Interestingly, a mistake on a McCarron pass led to the Warriors only touchdown. David Tann struck on Wahlert's first offensive play, intercepting Riley McCarron's pass that ricocheted off John Burgmeier and taking it 13 yards for a touchdown.
The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter. Michael Daughtery connected from 33 yards out for Washington, and Sam Koenig booted a 36-yard field for a 10-10 halftime score.
Washington (2-2) couldn't seem to get over the hump offensively. The Warriors tallied 212 rushing yards. Mitch Bredeson had 77, while Tann and quarterback Braedon Tovey added 68 and 67, respectively.
