Tuesday night's Class 4A boys' basketball substate finals

Feb. 27, 2012 8:13 pm
LINN-MAR (18-4) vs. CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (16-6)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Cedar Rapids Prairie
Scouting Report: These programs have met in some big postseason games over the years, and this is another one. Eighth-ranked Kennedy won the lone regular-season matchup, 56-51, but No. 5 Linn-Mar did not have injured forward Matt Lassen, a D-I Albany commit who missed the majority of the season with a severe concussion. Kennedy will rely heavily on its physical man-to-man defense. The Cougars have one player who averages double figures in scoring (Cody Bell), and he is right at 10.0. Kennedy did a great job slowing North Carolina recruit Marcus Paige in the regular-season meeting, holding him to 3-for-16 shooting. Paige leads Class 4A in scoring at 27 points per game.
CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON (14-8) vs. CEDAR FALLS (20-2)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Cedar Falls (McLeod Center)
Scouting Report: Third-ranked Cedar Falls has won 17 games in a row after a late December loss to Iowa City West. The Tigers like to push tempo behind outstanding senior point guard James Harrington, the Alabama track signee who averages 19.1 points per game. He also has an assist-to-turnover ratio of over 2-to-1. Jefferson must shorten the game by being deliberate offensively. The J-Hawks have a terrific senior point guard of their own in Taylor Olson (18.6 ppg), who is being recruited by Division I colleges. Ky Kramer had 22 points in Jeff's substate semifinal win over Marshalltown. Cedar Falls won the lone regular-season game between the two, 64-49.
IOWA CITY WEST (22-0) vs. BETTENDORF (15-7)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Muscatine
Scouting Report: West was ranked No. 1 all season, but somehow tumbled to No.2 in the final AP poll despite having four more first-place votes. The Trojans are led by their big three of guards Dondre Alexander (15.6 points per game) and Wyatt Lohaus (12.1 ppg) and forward Jeremy Morgan (14.9 ppg). Jacob Gylten and Myzeah Batie-Gaddy are good complementary players on the interior. Bettendorf is led by sophomore guard Cole Clearmann (17.0 ppg). The Bulldogs played three Mississippi Valley Conference schools in the regular season, beating Cedar Rapids Washington and Iowa City High and losing to Linn-Mar.
