Astronaut Peggy Whitson relentlessly pursued her dream to go into space: Peggy Whitson remembers watching in wonder, as a 9-year-old girl living in Beaconsfield, Iowa, as the first astronauts walked on the moon. But it wasn't until much later that she realized going into space was was realistic and achievable as a career for herself. 'My advice to people is find that passion, what inspires and drives you and makes you want to go to work,' she said. Medicaid complaints to Iowa Ombudsman tell story of frustration: Complaints to the Iowa Office of the Ombudsman increased in the past year, in part due to a 157 percent increase in cases connected to Medicaid managed-care organizations, according to its annual report released Monday. Overall, 4,855 complaints and information requests were filed to the office in 2017, representing a 6.7 increase from the previous year, according to the report. Read more >

After 4 years, feds close civil rights probe of Cedar Rapids schools: A four-year federal civil rights investigation into the Cedar Rapids school district has ended with investigators finding insufficient or no evidence of the district discriminating against African-American students. The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights opened the investigation in 2014 after receiving three related complaints that black students at Washington High School were subjected to harsher punishment than their white peers.
