Thursday's boys' state basketball tournament games

CLASS 2A SEMIFINALS

MFL/MAR MAC (24-1) vs. MOUNT VERNON (21-4)

When: 2 p.m.

Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines

Scouting Report: It was a tale of two very different quarterfinals for these two. Mount Vernon blasted North Cedar, 56-39, while MFL/Mar-Mac had to fight off a Sioux Center rally and controversial finish to win, 73-72. This game features team of contrasting styles. MFL/Mar-Mac likes it uptempo offensively, leading the 2A field in points per game. Mount Vernon relies heavily on its defense, leading the 2A field in fewest points allowed per game. Which style will win out? MV's Micah Russell had 20 points on 9-for-10 shooting against North Cedar. Four guys scored in double figures for MFL against Sioux Center, led by C.J. Mason's 17.

CLASS 3A SEMIFINALS

WESTERN DUBUQUE (24-2) vs. SIOUX CITY HEELAN (18-6)

When: 6:35 p.m.

Where: Wells Fargo Arena

Scouting Report: Can WD stop the streak? Heelan is three-time defending 3A champion and ousted top-seeded and unbeaten MOC/Floyd Valley in Tuesday's quarterfinals, 35-33. A big fourth quarter led Western Dubuque to a 58-46 quarterfinal win over Davenport Assumption. Heelan won despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the field. WD will need to be wary of Heelan junior guard Shane Graves, his team's leading scorer. Senior guard Michael Malloy returned from a knee injury suffered during football season to score four points and grab seven rebounds against MOC. Junior guard T.J. Lake went off for 26 points against Assumption, including a 12-0 solo run in the fourth quarter that untied the game.
