Susan Rae (McCrea) Voigt Mitchell, 80, died with family and loved ones at her side on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
A Celebration of Susan's Life and a committal service at St. Joseph Cemetery will be held later this spring, with the time and date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Friends of the Animal Center Foundation www.facf.org in Susan's honor.
Susan was born July 30, 1944, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of James and Helen (Carr) McCrea.
She graduated from Oskaloosa High School and attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, where she earned a Business Degree.
Susan married David Voigt in 1964, and the couple moved to Mount Vernon, IA. where they raised their two children. In 1994, Susan married Mark Mitchell and settled into a life and home in Iowa City.
Susan was employed at Mt. Vernon Bank and Trust for many years. After her retirement at the bank, she was employed by the Regina Catholic Education Center and the Iowa City School District Department of Transportation. Shortly after their marriage, Susan and Mark co-founded Scoops, a local Iowa City business. She continued serving Scoops customers and their dogs until her death.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. Susan enjoyed taking care of her home, family, and animals. She was intelligent, creative, kind, endearing, determined, and a bit stubborn. She will be dearly missed by all those she knew and loved.
Susan leaves behind her three children, twelve grandchildren, and one great-grandchild and her former spouses; daughter Wendy Voigt (Aaron Stence), sons Shawn Voigt (Karmen McShane), and David Mitchell; grandchildren Rachael Park (Adam Rees), Ellaina Park (Jackson Williams), Pieper Stence, Chloe Stence, Jackson Voigt, Madison Voigt, Mackenzie Voigt, Harrison Voigt, Alex Bradbury, Hannah Cain (Zach), Emma Steffens (Parker) and Graham Bradbury; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Rees; her brother, Dennis McCrea (Kate); nieces, Amanda Larkin (Chad), Sarah Gunn, and nephew Ben McCrea (Jackie); past spouses David Voigt and Mark Mitchell; and numerous extended family and friends.
