Mar. 18, 2010 6:28 pm
I will be giving some results from the second session. Refresh the page and they should pop in. I will have to get up and chase down quotes which will take me away from my laptop. Just be patient and they will come.
We have the pigtail consolations, followed by the winners' bracket second round and then first-round consolation.
No Iowans in pigtail consolations. First matches will be at 125. #5 Andrew Long of ISU vs. #12 Ben Kjar of Utah Valley. #3 Matt McDonough vs. Anthony Zanetta of Pitt.
Both matches are up.
McD didn't waste any time, going up 2-1 with just under 2 min. left in first. McD up 3-2 at the end of the first. McD has :57 of RT. Zanetta catches McD with ball-and-chain and tilts him for NF3. Zanetta up, 5-3. McD with R2 to tie it 5-5. 1:05 to go in second. Zanetta E1 to go up 6-5, but McD shoots in and scores a takedown for a 7-6 lead. McD with T2 in third for 9-6 lead and 1:25 of RT with 1:20 to go. McD wins 10-6.
Long and Kjar are scoreless with 25 secs left in first. Long riding Kjar in second. Still 0-0 with 1:15 to go in 2nd. Long rides out Kjar. 0-0 to start third but Long with 2:00 of RT. Long E1 and 1-0 lead which is actually 2-0 since RT is locked. Long wins 3-0.
Going for quotes. Be back soon (hopefully). No luck on quotes.
Dennis is up against Kelly Kubec of Oregon State. Dennis with first T2 at 1:52 mark of first. Dennis rides him out and leads 2-0 after first. He adds an escape to go up 3-0. Dennis wins 4-0.
ISU's Fanthorpe down 2-1 to start second against Cornell's Mike Grey. Fanthorpe E1 and 2-2 match halfway thru second. Fanthorpe almost gives up two but gets his own to go up 4-2. Fanthorpe wins, 4-2.
HUGE UPSET JUST OCCURRED. Unseeded Frank Santaite of Boston U. knocks off second-seed and defending NCAA 125-pound champ, 2-1, with a takedown at the buzzer. That is McD's side of the bracket.
Montell Marion and Central Michigan's Conor Beebe up now at 141. Beebe with opening takedown and leads 2-1 with a minute to go in first. Marion with takedown with 14 seconds to go, giving him a 3-2 lead at the end of first. Marion E1 and up 4-2. Marion allows e1 and gets T2 and NF2 for 8-3 lead. Marion wins 10-5.
Kerr wrestling J.P. O'Connor of Harvard. O'Connor is the top seed. O'Connor up 3-0 in second. O'Connor wins 7-1.
Mueller wrestling against Anthony D'Alie of Central Michigan. Mueller with T2 with 1:19 to go in first for 2-0 lead. Mueller up 5-1 behind another takedown. Mueller up 5-2 after two periods. Mueller wins.
Metcalf up against against American U's Kyle Borshoff. Metcalf up 4-2 about a minute in. Metcalf up 6-3 lead after first. Metcalf up 10-4 with about 45 secs to go in 2nd. Metcalf up 12-5 with 1:44 of RT at end of second. Metcalf wins. Sets up match in the quarters with Mitch mueller.
Morningstar is up against Okie State's Meade. He scored on a takedown to go up, 2-0, and rides him out for 30 secs to lead 2-0 after first. Meade E1 in second. Mstar with e1 in third. Mstar leads 3-1 with 50 secs to go. Mstar wins 3-1.
Beets is beating Michigan's Zeerip, 7-4. Beets wins 8-6.
Borschel won, but I don't have score or summary.
Keddy beats Caputo of Harvard, 5-2, I believe. Iowa is 16-2 with Erekson left in winners bracket and Beatty in wrestleback.
Erekson pins Navy's Scott Steele of Navy in the first period.
Varner and Zabriskie both win for ISU. Cyclones rebound from lackluster opening round by going 5-0 in the second round.
Top 10 teams after 285-pound second round: 1. Iowa 33.5, 2. Okie State 23, 3. Cornell 21, 4. Wisconsin 20,l 5. (tie) Ohio State and Iowa State 19, 7. Oklahoma 18.5, 8. Lehigh 17, 9 (tie) Penn State and Central Michigan 16.
