IOWA CITY — Another key coaching hire is expected in Iowa City.
Just weeks before spring football practices are expected to begin, Iowa football assistant coach Omar Young is expected to join the Las Vegas Raiders as a running backs coach, according to multiple reports. CBS Sports first reported the news Wednesday morning.
Young spent one season with the Hawkeyes, after serving as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots in 2024. He also coached with the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns.
Iowa recorded 2,300 rushing yards in 2025, benefiting from the Hawkeyes’ Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line. The Hawkeyes brought in FCS rushing leader LJ Phillips from the transfer portal this season, and will return Kamari Moulton, Nathan McNeil and Xavier Williams.
Young joined the staff after former Hawkeye Kaleb Johnson graduated, leaving Iowa wondering how the Hawkeyes could fill in the productivity the All-American had. Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski accounted for 545 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, but the remaining RBs recorded at least 169 rushing yards each and eight touchdowns.
Young’s departure marks the second major coaching change Iowa will make this offseason, after LeVar Woods left his role as special teams coordinator to take over the same role at Michigan State. Chris Polizzi was announced as an internal hire for Woods’ former role on Jan. 15.
Young joined Iowa after former coach Ladell Betts left the coaching staff after four years.
