The Regionalist Art Symposium will be held in Stone City, the site of Grant Wood's Stone City Art Colony. Prominent Grant Wood scholars will look at Stone City's Regionalist history. This will lead to a discussion of possibilities for Neo-Regionalists in Eastern Iowa. All regional artists are welcome to join in this discussion.
Panelists:
Sean Ulmer, Curator, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art
Edwin Ritts, Director, Dubuque Museum of Art
Randy Lengeling, Grant Wood Scholar and Collector, Dubuque Museum of Art Trustee
Kristy Raine, Reference Librarian and Archivist, Mount Mercy College
The symposium will mark the end of a weeklong landscape-painting workshop with noted pastel painter, Ellen Wagener. Artists who are not able to attend the entire workshop can join Wagener for the final day of landscape painting at Stone City. The fee for the one day of painting, including the Regionalist Symposium is $85. Maquoketa Art Experience resident artists Rose Frantzen, Charles Morris, and Thomas Metcalf will join Wagener to paint in Stone City. All artists who have done landscape paintings throughout the week or during the final day at Stone City will be invited to show and sell their paintings at a closing reception and exhibition to be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Maquoketa Art Experience Studio and Gallery, 124 S. Main St., Maquoketa. The reception is open to all, free of charge.
The five-day landscape workshop with Ellen Wagener, Aug. 17 through 21, is the first of four seasonal workshops sponsored by Maquoketa Art Experience focusing on the natural resources and beauty of Eastern Iowa. The workshop will combine on-site studies with studio work in the Maquoketa Art Experience Studio and Gallery. The workshop will also include opportunities to attend lectures at the Dubuque Museum of Art at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, and the Figge Art Museum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, where Ellen will discuss her work and influences. The fee for the weeklong workshop is $395.
