Iowa City Regina established itself as the best private-school football team in the area, and our voting panel took note.
Regina returned to the No. 1 spot in the Class 1A football rankings, as voted upon by seven-person committee by The Gazette/KCRG/KGYM on Monday.
The Regals (7-1) defeated Cedar Rapids Xavier, 21-7, Friday night at Saints Field for their seventh straight win and 63rd in the last 64 games. Regina had been rated No. 2 for seven straight weeks after suffering a season-opening loss to Solon, but received six of seven first-place votes this week to out-point previous No. 1 Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 69-63.
The other No. 1s remain the same - Cedar Rapids Washington (4A), Pella (3A), Clear Lake (2A), Maquoketa Valley (Class A) and Don Bosco (8-Man). All are 8-0.
Pella, Clear Lake and Don Bosco are unanimous choices at the top in their respective classes.
Washington maintained its 69-64 advantage on Bettendorf in 4A after defeating Iowa City High, 28-7, last week. The Warriors close their regular season Friday at Burlington.
Linn-Mar (7-1) is sixth in 4A.
Pella is the lone unbeaten in Class 3A. Defending 3A state champion Sioux City Heelan moved up a spot to No. 2 after West Delaware suffered a 10-0 loss to Independence. Solon is No. 3. West Delaware fell to seventh, Xavier to ninth. Clear Creek Amana is No. 8.
Clear Lake received all the first-place votes in 2A after downing New Hampton in a battle of unbeatens, 20-7, last week. Spirit Lake remains No. 2, followed by Williamsburg and North Fayette Valley.
Regina is followed in 1A by St. Edmond, South Winneshiek and West Branch. Maquoketa Valley has been atop the Class A rankings all season behind Ryan Parmely, who leads the state rushing derby with 2,149 yards. Parmely has scored 30 rushing touchdowns.
