I was baking some chicken the other night in my 9x13 Pyrex glass baking dish when something unfortunate happened.
It exploded.
Fortunately, I had removed the chicken to a serving platter, and had set it on the stove top to cool before cleaning it. I was at the sink, washing my hands when I heard a big noise, like a clunk, then a shatter.
Shards of glass were all over my stove top, but not in my chicken. The glass had gone one direction, not out in many. Unfortunately, I was in my sock feet, so I had to clean my way to the trash can.
After cursing whatever Kitchen Karma I annoyed, I searched on Google for “exploding Pyrex.” I'm not alone in my suddenly exploding Pyrex, and it seems there is no rhyme or reason for the Pyrex to go boom.
The Web site ConsumerAffairs.com has a series of articles about exploding Pyrex and some horror stories to go with it. Some had the hot Pyrex in their hands, fresh out of the oven. Others were almost as innocuous as my experience, having just taken the dish from the cupboard and set it on the counter.
I loved my Pyrex dish, and will buy another one. I've even been to the Corning Museum in New York state. (Really great museum and wonderful gift shop. There are other things that are made with glass than kitchen items. Like glass-beaded purses. I highly recommend a visit.)
Has anyone out there has a similar experience?
