Crews with Kelly Demolition in Mount Vernon, Iowa, began demolition of the historic Cedar Springs Hotel around 7a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010. Workers wore suits and respirators and sprayed the debris with water to minimize dust to protect themselves from asbestos fibers during the demolition. The hotel, built in 1884 on the bank of the Cedar River northwest of Palisades-Kepler State Park, was also known as the Biderman Hotel and the Upper Palisades Hotel. The structure stood vacant for about 50 years. The 2008 flood damaged the structure and removed all hope property owner Pat Biderman had of renovating the structure.
