By John Campbell: I was running with our dog, Boomer. When I returned home, I turned on the TV and could not believe what I was seeing.
It really hit home later that day when our daughter, Kelly, called in tears. She said they could not find her brother-in-law who had gone to work at the Pentagon that day. Later we learned the awful news that Craig Amundson had been one of the victims.
He left behind a wife and two kids. As soon as planes were flying again, we did all we could to help Kelly and Barry Amundson find flights and travel assistance as they tried to fly from California to the East Coast.
They became very active in a group called September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows.
One year later, I did a special report from Anamosa, where they stopped to remember Sept. 11 and their native son Craig Amundson, who had paid the ultimate price.
