By Nancy Lenz: On 9/11, I was a golf buddy to a group of older veterans at the VA Blind Tee Tournament at McBride golf course in Solon. One of my co-workers came out of the clubhouse with news that the Twin Towers had just been attacked. I quickly returned to the clubhouse to watch the horrific story unfold on the news.
I was asked to deliver water and the sad news to the veterans that were still on the golf course. As I rode out onto the course, I tried to think of how I was going to break the news to our veterans.
The first group of veterans we came upon were extremely shaken by the news, and a range of emotions surfaced, from tears to anger. One common statement from each and every one of those proud Americans that served our country was "If the military would take me, I would go to war right now." Remember, these are veterans who are blind.
As we continued out onto the golf course, the same statement rang out from each and every one of our veterans on that fateful day. I am so proud of our veterans, past and present, that have put their lives on the line for our freedom.
