The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System will open a larger community-based outpatient clinic in Cedar Rapids on Sept. 14.
The 28,000-square-foot clinic in leased space at 3500 Dalton Way SW, Suite 400, in Westdale Town Center will be more than two times larger that the existing VA outpatient clinic at 2230 Wiley Blvd. SW.
The current location will no longer serve as a VA outpatient facility after the move is completed.
'The new location will allow us to continue to meet the needs of our veterans and to provide quality access to care for the many veterans who live in the area,” Judith Johnson-Mekota, director of the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System, said in a news release.
The larger clinic will allow the veterans administration to add a physical therapy team and increase mental health services, reducing travel time and adding convenience for patients.
Other increased programs and services will include a blood draw laboratory, audiology, radiology and podiatry as well as added space for primary care and mental health appointments.
Home-based primary care also will be added for qualified patients.
'The added value to our patients will be the access to more services locally, like radiology and physical therapy,” said Michele Carter, Cedar Rapids clinic manager, in the release.
'The increased space also will allow staff to provide greater comfort and privacy for the veterans.
'We likewise will see an improvement in the education and training that we can provide for patients without waiting for available space to conduct those activities.”
The current Cedar Rapids VA clinic opened in 2009.
