CEDAR RAPIDS - Mason City's top-ranked Travis Mallo scored a little revenge Saturday during the quarterfinal round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A State Duals wrestling tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Mallo topped Southeast Polk's second-ranked Willie Miklus, 13-9, at 171 pounds, reversing the result from last week's individual state meet in Des Moines. Miklus earned an 11-9 victory in overtime in the quarterfinals over Mallo, advancing to win the 171-pound crown. Mallo came back to place third.
Mallo (42-2) held a 6-3 lead after two periods, but Miklus scored two takedowns and two nearfall points to take a 9-8 lead. Mallo scored a reversal and after a restart with 17 seconds to go caught Miklus on his back for the final three back points and the four-point win.
Southeast Polk, however, won the dual 32-29.
