Loy "Fat" Gibbs, 87, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 28, 2021. A visitation will be held from 5 to7 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will take place at
10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at
the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Cedar Rapids. All guests are respectfully requested to wear a mask and practice social distancing. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Fat, under "photos and videos or media," starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 8.
Fat was born on May 30, 1933, in Corydon, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Wilda (Walmer) Gibbs. He graduated from Millerton High School. Fat moved to Cedar Rapids and worked for Kieckhefer Paper before entering the military; after serving in the U.S. Army, he went back to Kieckhefer-Eddy Paper (later known as Weyerhaeuser Paper) and retired in 1990 as a production manager. Fat was a member of the VFW and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed bowling three times a week in the senior league at Lancer Lanes. In his younger years, Fat played softball, golf and basketball. He loved watching all sports, but he especially enjoyed watching golf. Fat was a great guy, a family hero, and one of the best. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
Survivors include his longtime sweetheart, Lorene Cook; his children, Pam Gibbs of Cedar Rapids and Kenny (Stayce) Gibbs of Ely, Iowa; grandchildren, Travis Gibbs, Andrew Gibbs and Tai-lee Wilcox; great-grandchild, Brayden Gibbs; siblings, Kathleen (Russell) Dotts of New Virginia, Iowa, Ellis "Butch" (Joy) Gibbs of Des Moines and Floyd (Marilyn) Gibbs of Rural Wayne County, Iowa; sister-in-law, Helen Gibbs of Pekin, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Wilda Gibbs; brothers, William Gibbs and Dean Gibbs; and sisters-in-law, Nina Gibbs and Marilyn Gibbs.
