Kernels make 2 roster moves

Before Sunday's game against Kane County, the Cedar Rapids Kernels announced a pair of roster moves involving pitchers.
Reliever Jeremy Thorne was promoted to high-Class A Rancho Cucamonga and reliever Vladimir Veras placed on the disabled list with a sore elbow. Thorne went 3-3 with three saves and a 2.39 earned run average in 19 games, including two starts.
Veras, who had elbow surgery two years ago, has a 3-2 record, team-high eight saves and 2.63 ERA in 21 games.
To replace them on the active roster, right-handers Matt Shoemaker and Nick Pugliese join the Kernels from Los Angeles Angels extended spring training. Shoemaker pitched seven games in an earlier stint this season with Cedar Rapids, going 1-0 with a 6.57 earned run average.
This is the first trip to Cedar Rapids for Pugliese, who had a 7.04 ERA in six appearances earlier this season for high-Class A Rancho Cucamonga. He is a non-drafted 2008 free agent from Stetson.
