Maybe this is the wave of the future in stadium/arena naming rights.
The Midwest League's Peoria Chiefs are selling naming rights to their downtown ballpark on a per-game basis. For $6,000, businesses get signage on top of each dugout, plugs on the team's radio broadcast and over the PA that night, a 30-second video commercial on the scoreboard, 50 tickets and an opportunity to distribute promotional material to fans.
"This offers businesses a very unique marketing opportunity for thousands of fans throughout Central Illinois," said Chiefs President Rocky Vonachen in a press release. "In addition this gives the companies a fun entertainment option for customers, employees and friends."
Peoria's ballpark had been known as O'Brien Field since opening in 2002. But a seven-year deal worth a reported $15,000 with the local car company expired after last season.
Unable to secure another long-term deal, the Chiefs are doing the next best thing. Spring Green is the first company to take the Chiefs up on their deal, paying for a game May 15 against Quad Cities.
"I was thrilled when this opportunity presented itself," Spring Green's Dave Vojta said in a press release. "For a small company like ours this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
The Cedar Rapids Kernels entered into a field naming rights deal at Veterans Memorial Stadium last season with Dale & Thomas Popcorn of New Jersey. That agreement was terminated after one season. Perfect Game USA baseball club/scouting service of Cedar Rapids agreed to a field naming rights deal with the Kernels that begins this season.
