Iowans in the minor leagues

Jun. 22, 2011 4:22 pm
OK, have tried to put a list together of kids from Iowa (former preps from Eastern Iowa and the Metro, as well as four-year college players) that are playing minor league baseball. Most of them are just now getting underway with their short seasons.
If there is someone from Iowa (or an Iowa College) not on this list, please let me know.
By the way, neither Solon outfielder Derrick Loveless (Blue Jays) or Cedar Rapids Washington pitcher Dakota Freese (White Sox) have signed. They were draft picks in MLB's recent first-year player draft.
Freese, in fact, has left Washington's team and is playing in a summer league in the Chicago area to increase his visibility and chances of eventually getting an offer from the Sox.
Scott Schebler (Cedar Rapids Prairie/DMACC) - Playing for Rookie-level Ogden of Pioneer League (Dodgers), he is 6-for-12 in two games, with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Kellen Sweeney (Cedar Rapids Jefferson) - Second-round pick of Toronto Blue Jays last year, Sweeney has played in one game for Rookie-level Bluefield of Appalachian League, going 0-for-3 with a walk.
Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids Xavier/Belmont University) - Signed by Marlins as non-drafted free agent, Woods is 5-for-11 with a double in two games for Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Marlins.
Joe Bisenius (Sioux City) - Veteran minor-league pitcher has thrown in nine games this season for Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte (White Sox).
Matt Holland (Marion/Iowa Central CC/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) - With Rookie-level GCL Phillies, Holland has played in one game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Lucas O'Rear (Northern Iowa) - With Rookie-level Arizona League Reds. Has made one start, giving up five hits and three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Jon Gilmore (Iowa City) - Former City High prep is hitting .208 in nine games for Double-A Birmingham (White Sox).
Chris Handke (Cornell College) - Has yet to pitch for Ogden (Dodgers) of Rookie-level Pioneer League.
Steve Turnbull (Iowa) - In his second season with Lansing (Blue Jays) of Midwest League, Turnbull has 15 saves in 25 games. Pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday night in the MWL All-Star Game in Davenport.
B.J. Hermsen (Manchester) - The former West Delaware prep is 5-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 13 games, 12 starts, for Beloit (Twins) in the Midwest League.
Brad Nelson (Algona) - Algona native is hitting .268 with 11 home runs in 64 games for Triple-A Round Rock (Astros).
Brandon Douglas (Northern Iowa) - Former Interstate-35 prep is hitting .252 with two home runs and 20 RBIs in 63 games as second baseman for Double-A Erie (Tigers).
Matt Macri (West Des Moines) - A second baseman for Triple-A Colorado Spring (Rockies), former Dowling prep is hitting .297 in 60 games.
Kurtis Muller (Iowa) - With Rookie-level Billings (Reds) after beginning season with Dayton of Midwest League, where he hit .167 in 10 games.
Justin Toole (Iowa) - Hitting .282 with 12 stolen bases in 59 games as infielder with high-Class A Kinston (Indians).
Bradley Watson (Wartburg) - Has yet to pitch after recently signing with Cardinals. Is with Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Cardinals.
Cody Gabella (Burlington/Southeastern Community College) - Son of former Burlington Bees Manager Jim Gabella is with the Arizona League Padres.
