INGE ERNA CERIO
Charles City
Inge Erna Cerio, 71, of Charles City, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the Floyd County Medical Center, in Charles City, on April 9, 2021.
A public funeral Mass will be held at
2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Tom Heathershaw officiating. The service will be live streamed on the Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home Facebook page starting at
2 p.m. on Tuesday. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the start of the service at the church on Tuesday.
Inge was born and raised in Hassloch, Germany. She met and married the love of her life, Andy Cerio, who was stationed in Hassloch while in the Army. They later moved back to the U.S. and settled in New York state, with Andy's family. Later, Andy's work took them to Ohio and eventually to Charles City, Iowa, where they lived for more than 40 years.
Inge received her BA in Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1997. She went on to teach German for more than 10 years in the Iowa City area and shared her love of the German language and culture to hundreds of students.
Inge was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where she served in many volunteer capacities. She also was an active member of many other groups and organizations such as PEO, the Alpha Writers Group based out of Osage, her Tuesday bridge club, German club and the city improvement association where she spent many volunteer hours helping nurture the community she loved.
Her interests and hobbies were many; she loved travel, walking, writing, collecting art, and was a prolific reader. Her most endearing quality was that she loved people and was always curious about their background and history; as a result, Inge had many friends from around the world whom she stayed in touch with regularly.
She is survived by older sister, Heidi Hengen (Hassloch, Germany; Wolfgang Hengen); daughters: Debra Cerio (Andy DuBois) of Boulder, Colo., and Nicole Clymer (Steve) of Cedar Rapids; son, Andrew Cerio (Robin) of Eagan, Minn.; her four grandchildren, Sam Clymer (21), Henry Clymer (18), Maddy Cerio (15), and Abby Cerio (12); and her nephews in Hassloch, Thomas Hengen (Iris), Michael Hengen (daughter Lisa) and close family friend Walt Schuur.
Inge was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Cerio; and her parents, Erna and Heinrich Moses.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and nurses of St. Croix Hospice and Floyd County Medical Center for their kindness and professional care.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Inge's honor to either The Charles City Art Center, The Charles City Library Foundation, or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
