Jun. 9, 2011 1:32 pm
Iowa City West baseball coach Charlie Stumpff is one win shy of 500 for his career and can reach the milestone Friday night. West hosts Dubuque Hempstead in a Mississippi Valley Conference double-header.
Stumpff is 499-326 in a career that began at Northeast Hamilton. He directed West to the Class 4A state championship game last season.
The Trojans are 7-6 this season.
Marion's Steve Fish also is approaching half a hundred victories. He is 12 victories shy, holding a 488-279 career record with Central City and Marion.
West Delaware's Mike Morrison and Vinton-Shellsburg's Jim Struve should hit the 500 mark sometime next season.
Charlie Stumpff, West High School baseball coach, hits grounders to infielders during practice Monday July 26, 2004 at the West High baseball diamond in Iowa City.
